A History of Assam - Edward Albert Gait

The northeastern region of India has a rich history, and Assam, in particular, has a distinct historical narrative. As Assam is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the northeastern states’, it holds a unique place in the region’s history and memory. This book provides a comprehensive history of Assam, spanning from the prehistoric era to the emergence of British rule. It covers the Stone Age, the traditional periods, and extends through the Vedic age, including the renowned Kamarupa kingdom from the fourth to the twelfth centuries ce. The volume also explores the notable Ahom and Koch kingdoms, as well as other kingdoms such as Jaintia, Manipuri, and Sylheti. It addresses themes such as the invasion of Muslim Sultanates, the decay and decline of the Ahom kingdom, the consolidation and expansion of the British Empire, the Anglo-Burmese War and its impact on Assam, and concludes with the emergence of the tea economy under British rule.
