IT Girls - Professor John S. Croucher

Women have played a vital role in the development of computing, although at times their participation has gone unrecognised. Their scholarly inventiveness and discoveries have provided a rich tapestry to add to the evolution of computer science in the world. It is important that these women be viewed through the lens of their time, placing their achievements in context throughout the past few centuries. These significant contributions by women date from the earliest times and this book brings together the stories of those who have left their mark, despite the significant hurdles they have faced. There are numerous tales of remarkable women in computing and their incredible achievements serve as an encouragement to others who have a yearning to follow in their footsteps.Although there are many women who deserve recognition in this way, including the much vaunted Ada Lovelace, Hedy Lamarr and Grace Hopper, there are others whose talent is undoubted although they have not received the plaudits they deserve. This book outlines the lives and work of talented women from different eras and countries.Inspired by the success of the author’s book Women of Science, this volume will provide a valuable reference tool and starting point for those who wish to further expand their knowledge of these women who played such a vital role in the development of computers that have changed the way we live.
