Psychology in Everyday Life - Julie Hulme

Psychology in Everyday Life explores the ways in which students can use psychology to enhance their own lives, as individuals, at work, and as socially aware global citizens.Psychology in Everyday Life is founded on concepts of psychological literacy and psychologically literate citizenship (Halpern, 2010; Cranney and Dunn, 2011). These two related concepts consider the ways in which a psychology education can help students and graduates to apply psychology to everyday life in order to solve problems for themselves, for their employers, and in the wider community. The book begins by introducing these concepts, and then introduces the concept of thinking about psychology in relation to the self. Subsequent chapters address psychology in relation to a widening social circle and the text closes with applying psychology in a global context. At each step, the focus will be on learning to think psychologically in everyday situations, and on applying psychology and psychological research methods to solving problems in daily life.Key features - Takes an applied approach by clearly addressing the relevance of psychology to modern lives. - Written with a focus on contemporary issues such as wellbeing, inclusion, employability, and sustainability. - Emphasizes students' skills and their application. - Each chapter begins with learning outcomes which underpin what students will learn and help to clarify salient concepts. - A one-page interview with a key researcher in each chapter highlights the important issues in the topic area. - At least two activities per chapter set students authentic problems and encourage them to apply psychological theory and/or methods to solve the problem. - End of chapter summaries reaffirm the knowledge and key take aways from the chapter. - Further reading suggestions at the end of each chapter allow students to deepen their learning, and provide professors with further class materials. - Also available as an e-book with functionality, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support.
