Story of Now - Janmohamed Shelina

***SHORTLISTED for the SLA's Information Book Awards 2024***An accessible and important introduction to the British Empire and how it impacted countries and communities across the world, for readers 10+. Perfect for fans of Stolen History or Empireland. The UK was once a huge global superpower. Its influence was felt in countries all over the world, but it didn't just affect other countries. It affected everything about the islands we live on today. It affected the language we speak, the food we eat, the buildings that surround us, the people who live here, and the prosperity we enjoy. It is who we are today. And yet while we learn about the Romans, Egyptians, Mughals, Ottomans and other empires at school, we barely breathe a word about the truth of the British Empire. Why is that? From the Industrial North to the grandchildren of the Windrush generation, to children in overseas territories and former colonies, to those whose families came here fleeing persecution. Story of Now examines the modern culture of Britain as well as the Commonwealth and all countries historically connected to Britain's past. It gently explores identity and encourages children to discover and celebrate their own stories and the ways we are all connected.Story of Now opens up an important conversation about Britain's imperial past, in a way that is accessible and understandable for children aged 10+.
